California mountains -- temp drops to feezing in winter. Alternative heat is wood stove at a cost of about $750 for three cords of wood but at 3 a.m. -- it's so darn cold when the fire has burned low.Oil filled radiator to heat a room -- how much should I spend?
Neither one is going to heat a large area (216 sq ft) so it would be tough to rely on them as a permanent source. They do have a thermostat so they will come on when the room temp falls below say 65 Deg. so set them at that temp. that way you won't frost your butt turning it on. The other thing to do is to ensure that you have a good wood stove that gets its chimney cleaned EVERY FALL to avoid creosote buildup Creosote can cause chimney fires, poor drafting of the stove smoke, smoke filled rooms, and very poor efficiency. # cords sounds like a lot of wood unless your house is quite large. Our 1100 sq ft house took just over 2 in BC, similar climate. don't split your wood too small, and make sure it is cut to length to fit your stove. At night just before you go to bed put in 2-3 large whole logs as big as the stove will take. Cut down the damper to slow the fire down. It should last 8 hrs and your heater may not even kick in. You should still have good coals to start your morning fire.Oil filled radiator to heat a room -- how much should I spend?
I have two of these in my house on half power and medium on the thermostat. Just for the point of having gentle even heat because my furnace is gas, does not heat this house well because it is so old. It makes a world of difference because I leave it on all the time. They take a long time to even out in a room so off and on does not work very well.. I paid about $30 for one from Walmart and the same for one from Lowe's. I love these heaters, they are a life saver when it comes to even heat in an old house.

Be sure to check out how much wattage they pull and be safe.

That's why I keep mine on half power.
Elec puts out about 5000 btu/ Kilowatt hour---- whether it is a 20$ elec fan heater, or you kitchen stove. Maybe learn to control your wood stove better. Draft correcter and heat exchanger both in chimney?
